"TANKEN Video: Welcome to Area Studies," distributed by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University, is a series of documentaries showcasing researchers who are engaged in cutting-edge research in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world. "TANKEN" means expedition in Japanese. We hope that these videos will be starting points for you to discover Area Studies. This interview video gives an overview of the digital documentation work of the Maritime Asia Heritage Survey (MAHS) in multiple countries, including the Maldives, Indonesia, and Thailand. The main part of the video highlights some of the most interesting sites and objects recorded by the MAHS to date. Viewers can get a glimpse of diverse sites in the coastal and riverine areas of the region that are currently threatened by climate change and other factors. The various technologies and method used by the project are introduced, including LiDAR scanning, drone imagery, and GIS, as are some of the digital assets created by the MAHS, including orthophotomaps and 3D visualizations. The video also discusses the challenges faced in the course of the project’s work and the measures taken both to conduct field survey work in remote areas, a collaboration with diverse stakeholders including ministries of several national governments.

Professor of Cross-regional Studies at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University, and an Associate Member of the History Faculty at the University of Oxford.

The main focus of Professor Feener’s work is in Islamic Studies, with a particular emphasis on the history of Muslim societies of Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean World.

「たんけん動画　地域研究へようこそ」は、京都大学東南アジア地域研究研究所が配信する研究紹介動画シリーズです。所員のフィールド活動や研究内容を広く公開し、最新の地域研究とそれに取り組む研究者の姿を紹介することを目的とします。

このインタビュー動画では、モルディブ、インドネシア、タイを含む複数の国々における海域アジア遺産調査（MAHS）のデジタル・ドキュメンテーション作業の概要を紹介します。動画のメインの部分では、MAHSがこれまでに記録した最も興味深い遺跡や遺物を紹介しています。視聴者は、気候変動やその他の要因によって現在脅かされている、この地域の沿岸部や河川流域の多様な場所を垣間見ることができます。LiDARスキャン、ドローン画像、GISなど、プロジェクトで使用されているさまざまな技術や手法、オルソ画像や3Dビジュアライゼーションなど、MAHSが作成したデジタル資産の一部も紹介されています。また、遠隔地での現地調査や、複数の国の省庁を含む多様なステークホルダーとの連携など、プロジェクトが直面した課題や対策についても紹介しています。
