The Utheemu Gan’Davaru was the family home of Muhammad Thakurufaanu, who is famous in the history of the Maldives for leading the opposition to the Portuguese occupation of the islands in the sixteenth century. The complex presents the largest and best preserved example of an elite house built in the vernacular style in the Maldives, and it retains important collections of objects and manuscripts associated with the family.
