Transnational research collaboration is seen as a powerful instrument
for increasing competitiveness of universities. It includes 1)
attracting and retaining talent to promote innovation, 2) creating
globally recognized research hubs, 3) enhancing exposure of national
science globally, 4) expanding the range of transnational funding
sources, 5) giving a boost to researchers on the global labour market.
However, there are differences between universities in addressing
globalization challenges, depending on 1) national research
strategies, 2) dependency from governmental funding; 3) level of
research excellence, 4) research cultures. All this evidently
translates into the organisation of research support services, their
priorities and instruments. Understanding these differences is crucial
for finding optimal instruments to promote collaboration in research
and developing a dialogue between RMA’s.
This panel session focuses on identifying globalisation strategies in
different types of European and Japanese universities and engagement
of RMA’s in addressing them. In Europe international collaboration and
mobility are taken for granted and strongly supported at national and
EU levels. In Japan this process started later, but much effort is now
invested in developing research support systems to create more
internationalized environments. Within both Europe and Japan there
are differences between universities with stronger or weaker
international profiles, private and public universities etc.
The session includes two presentations (Europe and Japan), followed by
a discussion with a larger panel (participants from Western and
Eastern Europe and Japan). The session aims to exchange ideas and
insights among RMAs looking for instruments to strengthen the
international profiles of their universities.
