Paradoxically, social sciences and humanities, both focused on studying society and humans, often have
difficulties with funding because of their problematic societal impact. Societal impact is often seen as a
barrier for researchers because it is narrowed down to economic/technological impact, ignoring many
other forms of knowledge transfer. This makes the divide between research and practice even deeper.
RMA"s might play an important role of brokers, connecting researchers, universities, funding organisations
and policy-makers, mobilising researchers to form strategic partnerships with societal actors and exploring
new funding landscapes. This would not only increase the visibility of SSH but also open new possibilities
for RMA"s, nationally and internationally, considering that impact is becoming more and more crucial for
research funding.
This panel session will encourage a discussion about a broader societal involvement of SSH by bringing
together RMA"s from Western Europe (Netherlands, France), Central Europe (Poland) and Japan - countries
which face different challenges by incorporating social sciences back to society. The session will include one
presentation about the generally recognized problems with the status of SSH and its funding, followed by
an extended panel discussion. Panelists will exchange views and experiences not only of research
universities but also by governmental bodies and funding organisations. Audience is invited to be actively
involved into discussion.
