Brief introduction to the Sustainable Economy Research Group (SERG).
This group was established in April 2014 with the original purpose of doing research on the green economy. At that time, the group was also known as the "Green Economy Research Group". Later, the organizer (Dimiter Ialnazov) and four PhD students (Alex Keeley, Kazuki Hao, Yugo Tanaka and Charles Boliko) focused on the particular topic of the energy transition in developing countries. The change from using fossil fuels to renewable energy is basically what has come to be known as energy transition (SDG 7). Our main goal is to contribute to a rapidly growing literature on the motivations, enabling factors (or enabling environment), and barriers to the energy transition in developing countries.
Since April 2018, we have some new members and research topics in our group such as using solar power for poverty alleviation (SDG 1), the shift to sustainable cities (SDG 11), and factors for the success of technology startups (SDG 9), among others. In 2018 we organized two workshops on the “Progress and Challenges in Achieving SDG 7: Some Insights from the Case Studies of Kenya and Indonesia” and on "Sustainable Cities: Theory, Examples and Challenges”. In June 2019 we organized a field trip to Shimadzu Corporation to learn more about its achievements and challenges related to the environmental SDGs and how the company plans to deal with the challenges. 20 students from various faculties and graduate schools of Kyoto University joined our trip.
Please feel free to join us.
