The Genmiskiyy mosque compound includes a cemetery, a bathing tank (veyo), and some stone ruins that may have been part of an earlier, pre-Islamic site, as there is a large artificial mound site (havittha) nearby of the type generally associated with Buddhist sites in the Maldives.

According to local tradition, the original Genmiskiyy (mosque) on this site was the first mosque built on the island of Fuvahmulah ub Gnyaviyani Atoll in 1275CE by Abu Baker Na’ib Kaleygefaanu. His grave is on site in a bisthaan (burial enclosure) just to the east of the mosque.
